On-The-Job
Training
The On-The-Job Training program helps eligible
applicants find private sector employment. The
applicants are screened and assessed for aptitudes,
skills and interests before referred to potential
employers. Employers are reimbursed for a portion
of the trainee's wages during the training period.
The trainee then continues as a permanent employee
after the training is complete.
Incumbent
Worker Grant
North Carolina's
Incumbent Workforce Development Program broadens
the scope of the state's existing incumbent worker
initiative. The Program provides funding to established
North Carolina businesses to provide educational
and occupational skills training for current workers,
and is designed to benefit businesses by enhancing
the skills of employees.

Career
Readiness Certification
In 2006, 19 North Carolina community colleges
piloted the Career Readiness Certification (CRC)
Initiative. Wilson Technical Community College
was one of the nineteen North Carolina community
colleges in the state approved to issue a CRC
certificate. The North Carolina CRC is a credential
supported and signed by North Carolina Governor
Michael F. Easley. It certifies that the certificate
holder has the employability skills to perform
30%, 65%, or 85% of a broad range of today’s
technical and administrative jobs.
For Wilson County and other
Eastern North Carolina counties who have frequently
suffered the impact of high unemployment due to
plant closings, to the decline of available unskilled
jobs, or labor market’s demand for a more
skilled workforce, the Career Readiness Certification
has the makings of an economic upsurge for Wilson
County. The CRC is exactly what businesses and
industries have been searching after. It is a
pre-employment tool that certifies to employers
that the job applicant is trainable for specific
jobs and has the employability skills necessary
to perform the required job tasks.
As more and more companies
realize the economic benefits to employing adults
with a Bronze, a Silver, or a Gold Career Readiness
Certification, employers will looked upon the
CRC as a reliable pre-employment tool and an efficient
training tool for upgrading incumbent workers’
workplace skills. The CRC is substantiated by
the American College Testing (ACT) WorkKeys’
Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information,
and Locating Information tests. Research has shown
that these three workplace skills are required
among a broad range of occupations and careers.
Imagine the economic growth
5, 10, or 15 years from today that the Career
Readiness Certification will have on Eastern North
Carolina’s workforce. A qualified workforce
is the top three features companies look for when
making decisions to move or expand their business
to another location. We believe the Career Readiness
Certification will play a significant role in
attracting new industry to Wilson County. How
impressive it will be to have statistical data
that supports Wilson County’s skilled workforce?
To illustrate to new and existing companies that
Wilson County’s adult workforce, less those
persons with a 4 year degree, have 30%, 65%, or
even 85% of the workplace skills to do technologically
high performance skilled jobs. That is why we
strongly encourage Wilson County residents to
invest in their future and in Wilson County’s
growth and get themselves “Career Ready”
with the North Carolina Career Readiness Certification.
